BGE Electricity Rates in 2026: Read the Whole Bill
A BGE electricity bill is not one rate multiplied by kWh. Separate the fixed customer charge, distribution, supply, transmission, EmPOWER and other adjustments before comparing months or a solar proposal.

September 2026 BGE residential reference
Maryland’s Office of People’s Counsel lists the following current reference charges. These are base-rate components, not a promise of the total rate on a particular bill. Adjustments, usage, supplier choice, taxes, gas service and other line items can change the result.
Current published components
| Bill component | Published reference |
|---|---|
| Fixed customer charge | $10.00 per month |
| Distribution | $0.04945 per kWh |
| EmPOWER surcharge | $0.01310 per kWh |
| Supply | $0.12519 per kWh |
| Transmission | $0.02322 per kWh |
| Supply plus transmission | $0.14841 per kWh |

Why one “price per kWh” can mislead
Dividing the whole account balance by kWh can mix fixed charges, gas service, old balances and taxes into an electricity figure. For a solar comparison, separate the charges that may change with imports from charges that can remain even when rooftop production is high.
Compare two BGE bills
Enter the billing days, total kWh and current electric charges from a current bill and a prior bill. Blank fields stay blank; this is arithmetic only and does not diagnose a rate plan or cause of a change.
Use the current-electric-charges line rather than the total account balance. Credits can make that charge negative.
When solar belongs in the comparison
Solar cannot correct a billing error or erase every charge. After the bill is understood, compare a written solar proposal against the home’s actual annual use, the correct utility treatment, the cash project price and the remaining bill. Use the state quote guide before submitting the optional inquiry below.
