The counts cover the SCE customers the records list under Palm Springs, Desert Hot Springs, Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, Indian Wells, La Quinta, Indio, Coachella, Bermuda Dunes, Thousand Palms, Thermal and Mecca; customers of other utilities are not in the data.

Home solar in the Coachella Valley by the numbers

SCE approved 2,386 home solar systems in the Coachella Valley in 2025, from 179 installers; the top three were named on 42% of them. The busiest year since 2021 was 2023, with 4,676 (2025: -49%). Another 1,002 were approved from January through May 2026.

2025 mix: 47% leased or on a power purchase agreement, 53% owned by the household; 84% with a battery; median size 8.91 kW DC.

Utilities and permit offices across the Coachella Valley

The California Energy Commission's utility maps split the valley between SCE in the west and the Imperial Irrigation District in the east, with small IID areas inside Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage and Indian Wells. The Commission's community choice layer shows Desert Community Energy over most of Palm Springs and the Rancho Mirage Energy Authority over most of Rancho Mirage.

The permit column is each city's own report to the Energy Commission under SB 379: residential solar permits issued, the share with battery storage and the share issued online, for 2024 unless another year is named, plus the automated platform the city reported.

"Coachella Valley" has no official boundary; this table covers the incorporated cities from Desert Hot Springs to Coachella and the main unincorporated communities. Hiring a solar company in the Coachella Valley

Solar companies in the Coachella Valley have to start with the utility, because the valley is split: SCE serves the western cities from Desert Hot Springs to Palm Desert, and the Imperial Irrigation District, a consumer-owned utility, serves Indio, La Quinta, Coachella and most of the eastern valley. Palm Springs and Rancho Mirage add their own community choice programs. Each city issues its own permit. Compare at least three written bids built on your own bill.

Start with your Coachella Valley electricity bill

The Coachella Valley has two delivery utilities and three generation arrangements. On the California Energy Commission's maps, SCE delivers power in Desert Hot Springs, Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage and most of Palm Desert and Indian Wells; IID serves Indio, La Quinta, Coachella and unincorporated communities such as Bermuda Dunes, Thousand Palms, Mecca and Thermal. In Palm Springs, Desert Community Energy supplies generation over SCE, and in Rancho Mirage the Rancho Mirage Energy Authority does.

SCE, IID and the valley's two community choice programs

IID describes itself as a consumer-owned utility serving more than 150,000 customers in the Imperial Valley and parts of Riverside and San Diego counties, which in the Coachella Valley means Indio, La Quinta, Coachella and the eastern unincorporated communities. A proposal for an IID home should cite IID's current solar program by name; SCE's Solar Billing Plan, which many valley installers quote by default, describes SCE accounts only.

West of there, SCE delivers the power and, in most cities, supplies it. Palm Springs and Rancho Mirage are the exceptions: Desert Community Energy buys electricity for enrolled Palm Springs customers, who were placed on its Carbon Free plan and can opt down to Desert Saver, and the Rancho Mirage Energy Authority serves most of Rancho Mirage. SCE still sends one bill in both cities. On SCE's Solar Billing Plan, exports earn hourly credits worth less than the power you buy.

When an existing system needs a diagnosis

If your Coachella Valley home already has solar and production drops, the monitoring app or the inverter's status display usually shows whether the whole system is off or one string of panels is down. The installer's workmanship warranty is the first call; ask for the warranty terms in writing before you sign any new contract, and who performs service if the installing company closes.

Permitting also varies across the valley. Cathedral City, La Quinta and Indio issued every 2024 residential solar permit online, while Palm Desert issued 6% of its 2025 permits online. Indian Wells, with fewer than 5,000 residents, is exempt from SB 379's automated permitting requirement. Ask each bidder which office has your address and how its last permit there went.

A bid that uses SCE's Solar Billing Plan for an Indio or La Quinta home is modeling the wrong utility, and one that ignores Desert Community Energy in Palm Springs is missing half the bill.
