Hiring a solar company in Palm Springs

Palm Springs law gives a qualifying rooftop solar system a fast lane: the City must issue the permit within three business days for a system of 10 kW AC or less that meets its checklist. Every Palm Springs home was enrolled in Desert Community Energy for generation, with SCE delivering the power, and DCE runs its own solar true-up in May. Compare at least three written bids built on your DCE and SCE bill.

Palm Springs' three-day rule for small rooftop systems

Chapter 8.100 of the Palm Springs Municipal Code covers small residential rooftop solar systems: 10 kW AC nameplate or less (or 30 kW thermal) and no taller than the legal building height. For those, the City's review is limited to whether the application meets local, state and federal code, the application must substantially follow the checklist and standard plans in the current California Solar Permitting Guidebook, and the permit must be issued within three business days once the application is complete. Fees follow the state limits the chapter cites. The City's Building and Safety forms list an Eligibility Checklist for Photovoltaic.

A larger system, a ground mount or anything outside the checklist falls outside that guarantee. If one bidder's design is 11 kW and another's is 9.8 kW, ask whether the difference moves your permit off the three-day track, and what the smaller design gives up.

    A comparison to ask for

A solar-electric bid and a solar pool-heating bid may both arrive under a solar heading. Separate them. Compare electric PV and storage against the electric bill, and compare pool-heating work against the equipment and fuel it replaces. For a seasonal home, use the actual occupancy pattern in both.

    Palm Springs solar quote questions

How fast can I get a solar permit in Palm Springs?

For a small residential rooftop system (10 kW AC or less) that meets the City's checklist, Palm Springs Municipal Code chapter 8.100 requires the permit to be issued within three business days of a complete application.

When does Desert Community Energy true up solar accounts?

In May each year. DCE settles generation monthly, pays surplus at a rate matching SCE's, rolls credits under $100 to the next bill and cashes out $100 or more.

Does solar pool heating reduce my electricity bill like PV panels?

It is a different system and comparison. Ask what existing pool-heating equipment or fuel it replaces, then evaluate electric PV separately.

Can DCE export credits cover every SCE charge?

DCE states its solar credits cannot be applied to SCE charges. Have both portions of your bill shown in the proposal.
