Hiring a solar company in Santa Clarita

Solar companies working in Santa Clarita file through the City's online eService permit portal and connect to Southern California Edison, which bills the whole account here; Clean Power Alliance does not list the city. If your roof is due for replacement, Santa Clarita's written re-roofing policy decides who may move the panels. Get three written bids on the same roof and SCE bill, then compare them on the checks below.

Solar and a new roof in Santa Clarita

Santa Clarita's Building & Safety division publishes a residential Solar PV Re-roofing Policy for homes whose panels must come off for a new roof. It requires a re-roof permit, which can go only to a licensed C-39 roofing contractor, a licensed B general contractor or an owner-builder, and a separate solar PV permit when the system is modified during removal and reinstallation. Replacing the inverter or modules, or upgrading the service panel, counts as a modification, and a panel upgrade needs its own permit on top.

The policy is blunt about who may touch the array: removal and reinstallation must be done by a licensed C-46 solar contractor, a C-10 electrical contractor, an A general engineering contractor or a B general building contractor; a C-39 roofer or the homeowner may not do it. The homeowner signs a Re-roofing Clearance Form before the permit issues. When a new roof and a new solar system go on together, each scope needs its own permit, because a C-46 solar contractor is not licensed to do the roofing. Roof repairs under 10% of the roof area or 200 square feet, whichever is smaller, that do not affect the solar system are exempt.

So a single Santa Clarita bid for roof plus solar should name two licenses and two permits. If it names only one, ask who is doing the other half of the job.

    A comparison to ask for

If your roof is near the end of its life, ask two bidders for the same layout priced two ways: solar on the existing roof, and a re-roof plus solar done together. Under the City's policy the roof and the solar need separate permits and a roofing contractor cannot remove or reinstall the panels, so the second quote should name both licensed contractors and both permits.

    Santa Clarita solar quote questions

Is Santa Clarita served by Clean Power Alliance?

Clean Power Alliance does not list Santa Clarita among its member communities, and SCE serves the city on the Energy Commission's map. Read the generation line on your own bill to confirm.

Do I need two permits to re-roof under solar in Santa Clarita?

Yes, when the panels must come off. The City's Solar PV Re-roofing Policy requires a re-roof permit and a separate solar PV permit when the system is modified, and only a C-46, C-10, A or B contractor may remove and reinstall the panels; a roofing contractor or homeowner may not.

How do I find a solar company in Santa Clarita?

Check each company's license at the CSLB, confirm it pulls permits through the City's eService portal, and get at least three written bids on the same roof layout and SCE bill. This page does not rank installers.
