Hiring a solar company in Lake Elsinore

Solar companies in Lake Elsinore apply through the City's online Citizen Self-Service Portal, and the City reported every residential solar permit for 2022 and 2023 as issued online. Its written requirements call for 36-inch roof clearances and engineering calculations for heavy, tile or trussed roofs. SCE supplies and delivers the power, with no community choice provider. Compare at least three written bids built on your own SCE bill.

Start with your Lake Elsinore electricity bill

Lake Elsinore is Southern California Edison territory for both delivery and generation: the California Energy Commission's map shows no community choice provider over the city. A new system goes on SCE's Solar Billing Plan, so a proposal should use SCE's hourly export credits and your own SCE usage, not a retail-rate estimate.

    Lake Elsinore's written solar requirements

The City's Building and Safety sheet for residential photovoltaic systems, written for the 2019 code cycle, spells out what a plan set has to show: module, panel, array and framing specifications; a plot plan with the array, setbacks, disconnects, inverters and meters; conduit and wire sizes; roof attachment and flashing details; an electrical single-line diagram with panel bus and breaker ratings; the required signage; and manufacturer brochures for the inverter, modules and racking. Ask your bidder which parts the City's current online submittal still requires.

Two rules shape the design itself. Roof-mounted arrays keep a 36-inch clearance at the ridgeline, valleys and eaves, though an array may run to the eave if three access points from the ground to the ridge remain. And when the existing roof's dead load plus the array's weight exceeds 10 pounds per square foot, or the roof is tile or trussed, the submittal must include a structural analysis. Ground-mounted arrays need a 10-foot vegetation-free or mowed perimeter, and Planning may have to approve the site plan.

What the permit reports show, and SCE's billing

Lake Elsinore reported 1,303 residential solar permits to the California Energy Commission for 2022 and 1,125 for 2023, every one issued online. Battery storage was still uncommon: 51 of the 2022 permits and 140 of the 2023 permits included it.

New systems here go on SCE's Solar Billing Plan. SCE locks export credit values for nine years from the year you start, pays higher credits in June through September and on summer evenings, and gives customers who enroll before 2028 a bonus credit of about $0.04 per kWh, or about $0.09 if income-qualified. SCE itself says its export credits are worth less than what you pay for grid power, so ask each bidder to show the bill with and without a battery.

    Related Lake Elsinore project questions

Use these guides to prepare the specific questions a written bid needs to answer.

    A comparison to ask for

Lake Elsinore bids differ most on the roof. Ask each bidder for the array's weight per square foot and your roof's existing dead load, since a total over 10 pounds per square foot, a tile roof or a trussed roof means engineering calculations. For a ground mount, ask about the 10-foot vegetation clearance and whether Planning must approve the site plan.

    Lake Elsinore solar quote questions

How do I get a solar permit in Lake Elsinore?

The contractor registers for the City's Citizen Self-Service Portal, submits the building permit application with the plans, pays the fees and requests inspections there. The City reported all 1,125 of its 2023 residential solar permits to the Energy Commission as issued online.

What roof rules apply to solar in Lake Elsinore?

The City's solar requirements call for 36-inch clearances at the ridgeline, valleys and eaves; an array may run down to the eave if three access points from the ground to the ridge remain. If the roof's existing dead load plus the array exceeds 10 pounds per square foot, or the roof is tile or trussed, the plans need engineering calculations.

Is there a community choice provider in Lake Elsinore?

No. The California Energy Commission's map shows Lake Elsinore entirely in SCE territory with no community choice aggregator, so SCE supplies both generation and delivery.

Does solar pool heating need the same permit as solar panels?

The City's solar requirement sheet covers photovoltaic systems, which make electricity. Solar pool heating uses the sun to heat pool water instead, so ask the City which permit applies to it; the site's solar pool heating guide explains how the two differ.
