Home solar in Irvine by the numbers

SCE approved 1,393 home solar systems in Irvine in 2025, from 98 installers; the top three were named on 53% of them. The busiest year since 2021 was 2023, with 2,685 (2025: -48%). Another 584 were approved from January through May 2026.

Hiring a solar company in Irvine

Irvine runs its own program for choosing a solar company: Solarize Irvine, a partnership with the nonprofit OC Goes Solar, uses a community evaluation panel to vet and select contractors and negotiates group pricing. Whatever route you take, your panels will be permitted through the City's same-day PermitsDIRECT! system, and Orange County Power Authority (not SCE) sets how your exported generation is paid.

Start with your Irvine electricity bill

Check the generation provider and rate plan on the current SCE bill. Orange County Power Authority can provide generation while SCE delivers electricity and handles billing. Solar charges and credits belong to both sides, so a proposal should not model an SCE-only generation account unless that is what the bill shows.

Solarize Irvine: the City's own contractor screen

The City of Irvine and the nonprofit OC Goes Solar run Solarize Irvine, which gives residents access to group pricing for solar and battery storage. The program recruits residents for a community contractor evaluation panel that vets and selects the participating contractors, and its workshops walk through a pre-negotiated pricing structure for the program-selected systems. The City scheduled its Solarize Irvine 2026 launch event for June 17 at the Las Lomas Community Center.

A Solarize price is still a quote to check, not a verdict. Put it next to at least two bids from companies outside the program, built on the same roof layout, the same OCPA and SCE bill and the same battery size, and compare the total price, the equipment and the warranty terms line by line. If the program-selected price wins on those terms, you have confirmed it; if not, you have learned something before signing.

Irvine's two permit routes

Since April 2024 Irvine has issued permits for eligible single-family solar and battery systems through PermitsDIRECT!, a web platform powered by Symbium that checks code compliance and the contractor and business licenses in real time. Fees are paid online and the permit is issued automatically, the same day, without manual review. To qualify, the job must be a rooftop system of no more than 38.4 kW, include no more than one battery storage system, and be submitted by a licensed contractor.

Anything larger goes through the standard route: plans uploaded to the IrvineReady! online portal, a completeness check the City says takes about two business days, an emailed fee link, then roughly five working days for the first plan check. The standard application must state the system's kW (DC) and panel count, flag any main panel upgrade or battery backup, and include load calculations if the main breaker is de-rated. Irvine also reminds homeowners that their HOA may run its own approval process.

How OCPA pays an Irvine solar home

Orange County Power Authority supplies generation for Irvine, with SCE delivering the power; SCE handles the delivery side of the solar charges and credits, and OCPA handles the generation side. OCPA says it currently treats solar customers on the Net Billing Tariff as if their generation were under NEM 2.0, reconciles generation charges monthly, runs an April annual true-up so credits banked in sunny months carry into winter, and pays 10% more than SCE for excess generation at true-up.

That makes an Irvine proposal different from one written for an SCE-only city nearby. Ask the bidder whether its savings figure uses OCPA's treatment of the generation side, and to show the SCE delivery charges you will still pay. OCPA's residential plans are Basic Choice, Smart Choice and 100% Renewable Choice; the plan on your bill changes the generation price the model should use.
